dundas market seeks hairdressers to fill the market to full capacity

Dundas Market, Middlesbrough’s only indoor market, has launched a campaign to attract key local businesses to help it achieve 100% occupancy.

Part of Dundas Shopping Centre, which itself is already fully occupied, Dundas Market’s campaign is designed to attract local hairdressers, specialist food retailers, florists, greengrocers, takeaway sandwich businesses and weigh and save operators to take a full time unit in the market which benefits from the shopping centre’s weekly footfall of more than 60,000.

“Hairdressers are our number one target, as there is a high demand for one among the shoppers in our market and in the shopping centre. It could be a separate ladies’ hairdressers and a gents’ barbers, or a mixed salon, but the demand is definitely there. Last year we had record numbers of shoppers in the shopping centre and the market,” says David Harris Dundas Market Manager.

“Dundas Market is a friendly community market which has grown considerably with more than 20 complementary businesses with clusters of beauty, food and fashion. Last year we had a number of new tenants taking up most of our available units, so we decided to set out to attract the types of business we know are in demand and which will enhance our offer.

“There are fantastic incentives and packages available for the right candidates who could be starting their own business for the first time, setting up another branch of their existing business, or returning to a full time work in their own shop. Whatever the circumstances we can help, and we are not just limited to certain business types, we are keen to hear from anyone who is interested in trading in our market.”

To help people starting out to test their business idea, Dundas Market also offers a small number of Enterprise Units from £60 per week all in, on short term tenant agreements.

Mr Harris continues: “We support all our traders with practical help and guidance and with a campaign of social media, public relations and events to encourage shoppers. As a result we have helped a number of businesses to start and grow from Enterprise Units into larger units in the market, and some have even gone on to move into retail units in the Dundas Shopping Centre.”

Open six days a week from Monday to Saturday, Dundas Market has more than 20 welcoming market stalls, including a nail bar, beauty therapist and tattooist, a butcher, Indian food takeaway, café and traditional sweet shop, as well as a designer and vintage gifts store and ladies’ fashion stalls, selling everything from handbags to gladrags, furniture to fizzbombs, make ups to vapes, candles to comics, babywear to bhajis and low fat Chicken Shawarmas, as well as mobile phone and tablet repairs.
